Are You
Ready?

We're not just building faster swimmers. We're building competitors. Athletes who think sharper, recover smarter, and show up on race day as the most prepared predators in the water. Always Ready. That's what RCA does.

RCA

The Story

About

RCA

A competitive swim club built on science, grit, and the belief that every swimmer has a faster version of themselves waiting to be unlocked.

The Philosophy

Most programs count yards. We count breakthroughs. River City Aquatics is built on a six-pillar coaching philosophy that treats discomfort as data, recovery as a competitive weapon, and every practice as a deliberate act of construction.

This philosophy emerged from years of elite competitive experience and the study of performance psychology. It treats the athlete as a system — not just a body in the water, but a neuromuscular, psychological, and strategic machine that can be tuned, calibrated, and improved at every level.

We don't chase goals. We execute objectives. We don't avoid pain. We embrace it. We program it, dose it, and deploy it on race day. When you walk on deck you may hear the ever-present battle cry coming from our head coach: "Make it hurt now so it doesn't hurt later!"

01
Quality Over Quantity
Every meter has a purpose. Purposeless volume is just damage dressed up as training.
02
Race Component Training
We train the race, not around it. Every set maps directly to a competition moment.
03
Programmed Pain
Pain is scheduled, dosed, and directed. We own it before it owns us.
04
Objectives Not Goals
Goals are wishes. Objectives are executable. We only deal in the latter.
05
Engineered Mindfulness
Mental training isn't soft. It's the sharpest edge on the competitive blade.
06
Recovery-Based Training
Adaptation happens outside the pool. We build the machines that build the times.

From First Water Contact to Elite Competition

Most swim programs begin at the pool and stay there. Ours begins before the first stroke is ever taken. River City Aquatics operates a complete developmental continuum — three distinct phases, each one preparing the swimmer for the next — built under a single coherent coaching philosophy.

01
River City Swim Academy
6 Months and Up

Water safety, water comfort, and a lifelong love of the water. RCSA takes infants and toddlers through our Hatchling, Minnow, Guppy, and Grouper levels — building confidence, basic movement patterns, and a neurological foundation for everything that follows.

RCA Stroke School
The Feel Curriculum

Before a swimmer can train at race intensity, they need an accurate proprioceptive map of their own movements in the water. Our Stroke School uses the Feel Curriculum to build that map — developing true water feel across all four strokes before volume is ever assigned. Swimmers progress through Otter, Dolphin, and Orca levels before entering the competitive program at Bronze.

RCA Competitive Program
Competitive Program

Race state. Pain thresholds. Minimum effective dose. Swimmers who arrive here carry a neurological advantage no amount of yardage can replicate. They self-correct in real time, process coaching cues immediately, and feel pace without a clock. This is where they learn to strike.

A Note on Patience

Group placement decisions rest entirely with the coaching staff. Moving through groups quickly does not guarantee success — statistically, the opposite is often true. For 99% of all swimmers, patience is the key. Please trust your child's coaches and the process. We are all working toward the same goal.

Why We Start With Breaststroke
+

Every other program in the country starts with freestyle. We don't. We start with breaststroke — and there's a reason that goes deeper than preference or tradition.

Human motor development follows a predictable sequence. Infants develop short-axis rotation first — the ability to bend at the waist, lift the head, curl forward. This happens months before they develop long-axis rotation, which is the rolling movement the body needs to breathe in freestyle. Your baby could do a sit-up before they could roll over. Breaststroke works with that natural sequence. Freestyle fights it.

When young swimmers are forced into freestyle before their bodies are ready, they compensate. They develop habits — head lifting, crossover pulls, scissor kicks — that are extremely difficult to undo later. We've inherited many of these swimmers. The remediation takes months.

Starting with breaststroke isn't unconventional. It's developmental. And at RCA, we coach what the body is actually ready to learn.

What "Don't Be Afraid to Care" Actually Means
+

When I picked "Don't Be Afraid to Care" for this season, a few people assumed it was about being nice. It isn't. It's about doing the harder thing.

It's easier to stay detached. It's easier to treat every swimmer the same and call it fair. Actually caring, noticing when a kid is discouraged before they say anything, holding an 8 and under to real technical standards instead of letting them splash through practice, telling a parent the truth even when it isn't what they want to hear, takes more from a coach than just showing up.

That's the standard here. Not just showing up. Not just being encouraging. Actually paying attention to whether a swimmer is getting better, and being honest with them and with ourselves about it.

"Nobody cares how much you know, until they know how much you care." — Theodore Roosevelt

If your swimmer is with RCA this season, I want them to know two things: that we expect a lot from them, and that we care about them getting there. Both things are true at the same time.

March 2026 · Bobby Brewer
The Parent Who Changed Everything
+

Early in my coaching career, I had a swimmer with real talent. Natural feel for the water, competitive instincts, the kind of kid you dream about coaching. And then his parents started sitting directly in front of his lane, calling instructions across the water during sets.

Within six months he quit. Not because swimming was hard. Because he had two coaches and couldn't satisfy either one.

The research is unambiguous: the single biggest predictor of a young athlete's longevity in sport is the behavior of their parents at practice and meets. Not the athlete's talent. Not the coach's credentials. The parents.

Your job is the most important job on our team. It's also the simplest: love them unconditionally, and let us do the coaching. Those two things together are unstoppable.

February 2026 · Bobby Brewer
Small Town. National Results. Here's How.
+

People ask me how a team from Cape Girardeau consistently produces Futures qualifiers, Sectional champions, and college-bound swimmers. The question usually comes with an implied assumption — that geography is a limiting factor.

None of that is true. What produces elite swimmers is elite coaching, elite culture, and relentless accountability. Those things can exist anywhere. We've proven it.

What actually helps us is what might seem like a disadvantage: we're small. I know every swimmer by name, by event, by what they ate for breakfast before a big meet. That intimacy is impossible at a program with 300 swimmers. It's our edge.

Cape Girardeau isn't a limitation. It's a feature.

January 2026 · Bobby Brewer
What I Look For at a Tryout
+

When a new swimmer comes in for a tryout, I'm not looking at their times. Times are a snapshot of where they've been. I'm looking at something harder to measure and far more predictive of success.

I'm watching how they respond to a correction. Do they try it immediately? Do they ask a clarifying question? Or do they nod and keep doing exactly what they were doing? That response tells me more about a swimmer's ceiling than any stopwatch ever will.

I'm watching how they handle discomfort. The moment a set gets hard, what does their body language say? Do they back off? Do they lean in? The ones who lean in are the ones I want in the water at 5:30am in January.

Talent is common. Coachability combined with competitive hunger is rare. When I find it, I build around it. If that sounds like your swimmer, come try out.

Head Coach & Executive Director
A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Brewer is the 1998 100m Backstroke National Champion and 10-Time USA Swimming National Team Member. As an 18-time All-American at the University of Georgia from 1994–98, he won three SEC individual titles and served as team captain. He swam professionally, co-authored The Olympic Dream and Spirit, and overcame a debilitating back injury heading into the 2000 Olympic Trials — then came back to win a national championship, a US Open Championship, and qualify for multiple national teams. In 2004 he earned his Master's in Sport Science and served as VP of Premier Management Group, managing Olympic swimmers including Aaron Peirsol and Amanda Beard. He later served as Head Coach of the Army's Wounded Warrior Program before founding RCA. "There is no magic in coaching," Brewer says. "We train at race pace and with attention to technique since that is how we want it on race day. Every day is race day."

Assistant Coach, Silver Group
Zach started coaching with RCA in Spring 2023 and currently coaches the Silver group. Born and raised in Jackson, Missouri, he began swimming competitively at age 5 with the Jackson Barracudas, then swam with the Gators Swim Team for 10 years year-round and 3 additional summers — also coaching through private lessons. His favorite meets as a competitor were the Junior Olympics and the Kerr-McGhee Pro-Am. Zach draws on those experiences and memories to build his group's confidence, develop a lifelong passion for the sport, and — most importantly — have fun.

What Is RCA Summer Swim?

Every champion started
exactly here.

RCA Summer Swim is the summer version of our Stroke School program — but bigger. Swimmers ages 4–18 learn all four competitive strokes, master starts and turns, and compete in real AAU swim meets. Coached by the same staff that produces national qualifiers.

This isn't swim lessons. This is an introduction to competitive swimming the way it was meant to be taught — with purpose, precision, and the same intensity that defines everything RCA does. Your swimmer will leave faster, more confident, and ready for what comes next.

Real Competition

real meets.

Summer Swim isn't just about learning — it's about competing. Throughout the session, swimmers participate in AAU-sanctioned meets where they race against other swimmers their age, earn ribbons and medals, and experience the real thing.

There is nothing like standing behind the block for the first time. We get every swimmer there.

progress.

Stroke School runs the full school year — two structured practices a week, every week, from September through May. That consistency is what turns a swimmer who can float into a swimmer who can really move through the water.

No meets, no pressure — just steady, focused skill-building until your swimmer is ready to try out for RCA's year-round competitive program.

FAQ

Everything You Need to Know

Frequently Asked
Questions

New to RCA or just have questions? You are in the right place. If you do not see what you are looking for, reach out directly at info@rivercityaquatics.org.

Getting Started
How do I join RCA?

The process is simple. Reach out to us at info@rivercityaquatics.org to schedule a tryout. We will find a time that works, evaluate your swimmer in the water, and place them in the appropriate training group based on their skill level. From there, registration is handled through our SportsEngine page.

No prior competitive experience is required for Stroke School or Bronze. If your swimmer can swim, we can work with them.

How do I register my swimmer with USA Swimming?

Every RCA year-round swimmer must have an active USA Swimming membership before their first practice. Register through the RCA team portal: RCA USA Swimming Registration Portal →

Step 1 — Create a parent login: Click Create a Login on the portal. Enter your parent/guardian email and verify it with the code sent to your inbox. Create a username and password and fill out your contact information.

Step 2 — Accept acknowledgments: Read and accept the legal waivers.

Step 3 — Register the swimmer: Click Register New Member from your dashboard. Indicate whether the membership is for yourself or your child. Answer "No" if the swimmer has never had a USA Swimming membership before.

Step 4 — Select membership type: Choose PREMIUM membership swimmer.

Step 5 — Review and checkout: Verify the swimmer's information, add another family member if needed, and complete checkout by paying the required USA Swimming and Local Swim Committee (LSC) fees.

What age do you accept?

Our Stroke School program accepts swimmers as young as 4 years old. Our first competitive group, Bronze, generally starts at a minimum age of 6. There is no upper age limit — we welcome swimmers of all ages who are ready to train and compete.

How do you determine which group my swimmer is placed in?

Group placement is determined entirely by the coaching staff during the tryout evaluation. We assess technique across all four strokes, turns, starts, and overall water comfort. Age is a factor but not the deciding one — what matters most is where your swimmer is technically and physically.

Each group has specific prerequisites outlined on our Practice page. All placements are at coach discretion, and we will always place your swimmer where they will develop best — not just where they want to be.

What equipment does my swimmer need?

Equipment requirements vary by training group. Full equipment lists for every group are available on the Practice page under Training Groups. In general, the higher the group, the more specialized the equipment.

For all groups you will need at minimum: a swimsuit, swim cap, and goggles. Do not purchase equipment before your tryout — we will tell you exactly what your swimmer needs once they are placed.

Fees & Billing
What are the monthly dues?

Monthly dues are billed per training group as follows:

Stroke School$129/mo
Bronze$130/mo
Silver$150/mo
Gold$190/mo
Senior Prep$175/mo
Senior 1$190/mo
Senior 2$230/mo
National Prep$230/mo

Monthly dues cover pool time, coaching, and access to the SwimStrong dry-land program. Meet entry fees and USA Swimming membership are billed separately.

Are there additional fees beyond monthly dues?

Yes — there are two additional costs to be aware of:

  • USA Swimming Membership — $90 per year, required for all competitive swimmers to participate in sanctioned meets. This is paid directly to USA Swimming annually.
  • Meet Entry Fees — Variable, set by the host team for each meet. These are billed through your SportsEngine account and typically range from $5–$12 per event entered.

Equipment is a one-time purchase when your swimmer joins. Full equipment lists are on the Practice page.

How much does Summer Swim cost?

Summer Swim is $299 for the full 7-week session (June 1 – July 18, 2026). This includes all instruction and most AAU meets during the session window.

Junior Olympic qualifying meets and the Summer Championship meet require separate meet entry fees, as those are independently operated events. We will notify families in advance of any meets with additional costs.

Is financial assistance available?

We do not currently have a formal financial assistance program, but we understand that cost can be a barrier and we genuinely want to help when we can. If your family has a need, please reach out directly at info@rivercityaquatics.org and we will have a private conversation.

USA Swimming also offers an Outreach Membership program for qualifying families that reduces the annual membership fee. Information is available at usaswimming.org.

What is your cancellation or pause policy?

Swimming asks more of athletes and families than most sports — simply because our sport happens in a different environment than everything else. The water demands consistency in a way that a field or court does not. We respect that, and we also understand that athletes participate in multiple sports throughout the year, or that sometimes swimming just is not the right fit.

If you need to pause or stop your account, just reach out to us. We will deactivate your account at the end of the current month to stop billing. When you are ready to return, we will reactivate it and pick up right where you left off.

We ask that you give us at least one month notice when possible so we can plan accordingly and avoid billing you for a month you did not intend to pay for. Life happens — just communicate with us and we will work with you.

Competition & Training
Is meet attendance required?

RCA is a competitive swim team, and competition is a core part of what we do. We expect all team members to participate in meets — that expectation increases as swimmers move into higher training groups.

That said, meet attendance requirements vary somewhat by group. The coaching staff will communicate expectations clearly when your swimmer joins. If you have scheduling conflicts or concerns, talk to the coaching staff directly. We are reasonable — we just ask that swimming and competing be treated as a genuine commitment.

Does my swimmer need prior competitive experience?

No. Stroke School and Bronze are specifically designed for swimmers who are new to competitive swimming. All we ask is that your swimmer is comfortable in the water and willing to work. Our coaching staff will handle the rest.

For Silver and above, swimmers do need to meet specific technical prerequisites. Those are listed in detail on the Practice page under Training Groups.

My swimmer plays other sports. Can they still join RCA?

Yes — many RCA swimmers are multi-sport athletes, particularly in our developmental groups. We work with families to accommodate other sport schedules where possible, especially in Bronze, Silver, and Senior Prep.

At the higher group levels, the training commitment increases significantly and conflicts become harder to manage. The coaching staff will be honest with you about what is realistic for your swimmer based on their group and goals.

AUDITION

Join the Band

How to Try Out

Every band needs the right players. Here is exactly how to audition for River City Aquatics — step by step.

Step 01
Make Contact

Send us an email at info@rivercityaquatics.org and let us know you are interested in joining RCA. Tell us your swimmer's name, age, and any swimming background — or lack thereof. We do not bite.

✉ info@rivercityaquatics.org
Step 02
Book Your Audition

We will find a day and time that works for your schedule. Your swimmer will audition with one of our coaches — a member of The Band — in the water at the Cape Girardeau Aquatic Center. We keep it low pressure and focused on what matters: what your swimmer can do.

📍 1920 Whitener St · Cape Girardeau, MO
Step 03
Show Us What You Have Got

Your coach evaluates your swimmer across all four competitive strokes — freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly — plus a racing dive off the blocks, flip turns, and general endurance. We are not looking for perfection. We are looking for potential and coachability.

Step 04
We Make the Call

After the audition your coach follows up with a group placement based on skill level and age. We will walk you through exactly which group your swimmer is joining, what to expect, and answer any questions you have. All placement decisions are final and made in the best interest of your swimmer's development.

Coach decision · Your swimmer's best interest
Step 05
Onboarding & Setup

We get you registered through SportsEngine, walk you through practice logistics, schedule, and expectations, and give you the full equipment list for your group. We make sure you know exactly where to be, when to be there, and what to bring on day one. No guessing.

Step 06
Register with USA Swimming

Every RCA year-round swimmer must have an active USA Swimming membership before their first practice. Register through our team portal and see the FAQ for full step-by-step instructions.

Step 07
Welcome to the Band

You are now officially part of River City Aquatics. Get ready to train hard, compete harder, and become the fastest version of yourself. Your masterpiece is waiting to be written and the tour starts now.

Begin wearing sunglasses indoors. Limit autograph time to 15 minutes per session. The fans will understand.

Competitive Swimming at RCA

RCA runs two programs with two separate handbooks — AAU Summer Swim and USA Swimming (year-round). Download the one that matches your swimmer's program below.

Example Partnership Night
RCA Day at Jimmy John's
Thursday, June 25, 2026  ·  Cape Girardeau, MO

A percentage of all sales at Jimmy John's that day went directly to River City Aquatics. A simple, low-lift way for a local business to give back — interested in doing something similar?
